Together with providing fire suppression and prevention, Mountain View Fire also offers pre-hospital emergency medical care. The Fire District has been responding to emergency medical calls for the past 30 years. All firefighters within the District are required to have medical certification and participate in the EMS (emergency medical services) division. Their skills range from emergency first responders, Emergency Medical Technicians and paramedics. Volunteer firefighters are required to maintain the level of a first responder, but most have received training to the level of an EMT-Basic. All career firefighters hold a minimum level of EMT-Basic and fourteen paramedics complete the staff.

With an increase in emergency medical response, paramedics were added to the career staff in 1996. In 2001, Mountain View Fire expanded its services to include pre-hospital transportation, with the addition of its first paramedic rescue. Mountain View Fire is the only Fire District in both Boulder and Weld counties to provide both fire suppression and EMS transport service. The District provides this service with four Paramedic/Rescues providing ALS (advanced life support) transportation. While all of the Rescues are equipped with fire suppression equipment, two of the Paramedic/Rescues also carry a 30 gallon foam suppression unit. All of the Paramedic/Rescues are staffed with a minimum of one Firefighter/EMT and one Firefighter/Paramedic. All members assigned to the EMS division are also crossed trained in fire suppression duties.

Our EMS Director is Twink Dalton. Twink comes to Mountain View Fire from "Pridemark Paramedics" were she served as their clinical educator. Twink is a nurse, as well as a paramedic, and started her career in Omaha, Nebraska were she was a nurse in the Emergency Department. She was then assigned to the Paramedic training program and then to "Omaha Fire Department" for education and run reviews. She also helped O.F.D. set-up their paramedic program. Mrs. Dalton has written text books for pre-hospital care and instructed EMS conferences across the United States. She is excited to join MVFPD and is happy to call it her home.

Our medic units respond from five locations throughout the fire district. 2221/2223 responds alternately from Station 1 and Station 3, 2224 from Station 4, 2226 from Station 6, and 2227 from Station 7.

In addition to providing emergency response and pre-hospital care, the Fire District EMS division also offers the following services:
1. Stand-bys at special events.
2. 9-Health Fair participation.
3. Bike medic program for EMS coverage during special events.
4. Monthly blood pressure checks at the local Senior Centers.
5. Child car seat program.
6. CPR and First Aid Classes.

MVFPD 1st Fire Department to use ORTHO-GLASS
Mountain View Fire is the first Fire Department/District in the United States to use "BSN Medicals ORTHO-GLASS" system. What is ORTHO-GLASS? The ORTHO-GLASS system is a fast-setting half cast system used for splinting possible fractures. This is the same type of system that many local hospitals use to cast people who may have broken an arm/wrist, ankle and such. Using the half cast system allows the broken limb the ability to swell without some of the problems associated with a full cast. The Ortho-glass system allows for a paramedic in the field to make a cast that will conform to the fracture, providing better splinting during transportation to the hospital.

The system consists of a fiberglass cast, wrapped in a protective covering.  The firefighters determine the length needed to splint the possible fracture and it is cut to length.  Next, water is added to the fiberglass wrap which causes it to start to harden.  Then an "Ace-Bandage" is wrapped around the fiberglass cast and the injured part.  In about 10 minutes the cast is set.

MVFPD now carries this system on all of its career fire apparatus in the Fire District. Mountain View Fire is excited to be the only Fire Department/District in the United States to provide this service.
